Episode 140 - The Midnight Ride vs The Mercifully Short Offseason

Matt Reis and the last time he wore a New England Kit - Photo by Kari Heistad

The New England Revolution have wrapped up 2013 with some great results and raised expectations as they start to put the pieces together for 2014.  The Revs have their work cut out for them replacing the likes of Matt Reis and Juan Agudelo - thankfully the transfer window opens in less than 2 weeks! Will 2014 be the year that the #NERevs make that big splash signing? It may be - and it may be a shocker!

Massachusetts Open Cup Final sees MPS through

November 24th - Clemente Field - Boston

The fixture was set weeks ago.  Two teams, Mass Premier Soccer and Mass United FC, were to meet on a Sunday afternoon in late November to decide who would be Massachusetts Open Cup Champion.

As the poet once said, "The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry."

The game was set for a 2:00 kick-off, but got moved up to a 1:30 kickoff over concerns of running out of daylight. So as this reporter arrived at the field shortly after 2 PM, the game was already 30 minutes in and Mass Premier were trailing 1-0.

The problem was - Mass United FC were not on the field.

Prior to the game, Mass Premier Soccer were informed that Mass United FC were disqualified after fielding an ineligible player in the semi-final.  The disqualification resulted in the loser of the semi-final, Valeo Sports, moving on to the final instead.

Despite fielding a team of irregulars, Valeo Sports took the lead in the first half with a brilliant piece of individual play from Marillo Zanetti. Zanetti reportedly beat the defender by bouncing the ball over his opponent, and bringing it down on to his foot, fired past the MPS Keeper, Jeff Newman.

However, Mass Premier Soccer were able to keep their composure and equalize near the 40 minute mark. MPS pressured their opponents deep into their own half, and former SMU and FC Dallas midfielder Ben Shuleva managed to capitalize by beating the keeper inside a very congested penalty area.

The second half saw both teams struggle against the elements with sub-freezing temperatures, and a swirling wind that whipped down the field and back the other way.  Other than the cold and wind, the only constant in the game, was the stream of profanity coming from the Valeo coaches sitting in the stands, presumably prohibited from the touchline.  The verbal tirade had little effect however, but despite their overall poor play, they were able to hold off an ineffective MPS attack.

Both teams had chances toward the end of full time to go ahead, and Valeo probably deserved a penalty awarded in their favor for a trip near the box, but the referee called no foul as MPS was able to counter.  MPS also had a chance in the second half with a free kick from Nick Crestman, who wiped it inside the box from the right side 25 yards out.  The ball was flicked on to Ben Shuleva by forward Chuck Romero, but Shuleva's header was caught by the keeper right on the line.

The game quickly went into extra time as daylight was running out.  MPS proved to be the more consistent with the ball and pressed hard for the go ahead goal.  It came finally in the second extra time period with about 10 minutes left to play. When a corner kick found its way to MPS forward Tyler MacNee, who was left unmarked, and was able to take a touch in the box, settle the ball, and drive it past the Valeo keeper with his right foot for the go ahead goal.

Valeo however did not give up and continued to press forward.  With under 5 minutes left, they pushed forward and seemingly had Newman beat, but the shot was cleared off the line by MPS defender Jake Edwards.  Time eventually ran out on Valeo and MPS secured their spot in the Open Cup USASA Region 1 tournament next spring.

Episode 139 - The Midnight Ride vs The Decline of Options

The New England Revolution have announced that they now have 15 players on their 30 man roster. But don’t worry JoGo is BACK.  All will be well.

Hank and Matty go through the news and try and make sense of all the moves and non moves that Bilello, Burns and Heaps are making - or NOT making - as the case may be.

The Revs lost in the playoffs - same old story? same old Revs? Not so fast - this ain’t your old New England team - the Revs played their guts out and in the end went toe to toe with one of the better teams in the league.  Hank and Matty try to put the anti-climactic end of the NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION ’s season in perspective, and decide, maybe it wasn’t all that anti-climactic after all.

So the playoffs are upon us - and the Revolution are on the brink of qualifying for the MLS Cup Tournament for the first time since 2009. But standing in their way are the Slime that is Orange. Let's face it - we all hate Houston. Except those that live in Houston. And maybe they hate Houston too. But if the Revs can take 3 points on saturday night, they'll be one game closer to clinching.  DC United lost by the way. We talk about that game and the extraordinary play of Lee Nguyen. Photo by Kari Heistad

In this episode, Hank and Matty talk New England Revolution, and all the love being showered on Kelyn Rowe. Is too much love a good thing? Absoultely - especially when it results in Kelyn giving a little love back - via two goals and a love note on instagram. We'll take it any way we can get here in New England, and a 5 goal game is just the ticket for the Revs faithful. We also talk about the recent lineup changes and what we can expect in Toronto. Will Saer Sene make it back into the lineup? Will Coach Heaps give Diego a rest? Will the city of Boston pass the referendum vote to build a Casino, and how will that impact the Revs chances for a stadium at Wonderland?

In this episode, Hank and Matty talk about the New England Revolution as they look to close out their three game road trip with back to back wins. First they go all the way back to talk about the disappointing loss vs Houston and then follow up with another disappointing loss at Colorado - but two stoppage time goals and an outstanding performance by Jose Goncalves with key substitutions from Jay Heaps are enough to bring sunshine back into the land of Foxboro. The last time the Revs faced DC the result was a scoreless draw - but if the Revs get three on the road, and Chicago gets a result vs Houston, then the Boys in Blue BOUNCE over the slime and grab the 5th playoff spot. We also speculate on the rumors circulating around the transfer window and wonder if there is any thing lined up for New England.

However that all changed on Saturday when the Revs responded to recent criticism and delivered a decisive victory over a sub par opponent.  Lee Nguyen off the snide getting MOTM with a goal and an assist and Bobby Shuttleworth notching another shutout. However the Revs defense is taking a beating, and thanks to the MLSDC is down a man.  Meanwhile Michael Farfan walks free and Andrew Farrell is out with a knee contusion.  Where is the justice?

They wrap it up with a clarification on the MLS transfer fee policy and a brief look at the Youth Academy (best in the country?) and finally just run out of things to talk about.

Episode 107 - The Midnight Ride vs The Mystery Guest

In this episode, Hank and Matty were on pace to wrap it up in about 45 minutes, when none other than ANDY DORMAN decides to call in.  We grill Andy about the changes in the league since he last played here, and what it's like playing for a former teammate. Andy lays it all out for us with a fantastic welsh accent, which automatically lends to our credibility.  Hank and Matty also rehash Philly, predict KC, and answer your e-mails, but ANDY DORMAN CALLED!!! Holy Shnikies!

Episode 106 - The Midnight Ride and Alexi Lalas save Rivalry Week

In this episode, Hank and Matty are joined by the legendary Alexi Lalas, who tells us his thoughts on New England Revolution, their chances for success, what they need to do make it happen.  He lays it all out on the line, and it's one for the books.  We talk rivalry week, and Hank tries hard not to back peddle. Alexi also picks his supporters group - Sorry Rev Army, no love for you from THE Ginger. The rest of the show is meaningless.

But Hank and Matty do talk a little about the lineup in Chicago, the surprises, the question marks, and then Hank talks to Murph from the Reckless Challenge.

Episode 105 - The Midnight Ride vs The Unknown Line-up

In this episode, Hank and Matty are all "Fired" up for the New England Revolution's first game of the season against the evil Chicago Fire.  Hank and Matty review the Revs media day and get a little bit into the on-line chat from Jay Heaps which leads them to a discussion on who is going to be captain for this team.  Is it Matt Reis by default? by seniority? Time will tell.  In the second section Hank talks to Jeff Krause from the Fire Confidential Podcast (@firepodFC) about what to expect from the Fire on Saturday night.  Matty and Hank then close out the show with more talk about the Revs and potential line-ups against the Fire, and then review all the chatter in the #NEREVS hashtag mailbag.
